Edgartown, the oldest settlement on Martha's Vineyard, has a long history that dates back to the early 1600's. Before it became the popular tourist destination it is today, the town was known as a prominent player in the global whaling industry. As such, ships from all over the world would sail to the island and, to light their way, the Cape Poge Lighthouse and The Edgartown Lighthouse were constructed.

The Lightkeeper's Inn, a Lark property, was originally home to Henry Thomas Lyman, lightkeeper of The Edgartown Lighthouse from 1931 to 1938.  Lyman was the last keeper of the original wooden lighthouse before it was demolished by a hurricane in 1938 and replaced with the steel, automated lighthouse that exists today.
